If you want to skip the small talk and get the book right now while it’s still 99 cents, you’ll find it here

I’ve always said that every therapist should be developing an email list and communicating regularly with their clients. It doesn’t matter if you have 30 clients or 3,000 clients. And I’m constantly shocked that almost no therapists do this.

I think part of the problem is that the idea of writing and producing an email newsletter is just too intimidating… and possibly expensive. Well, four years ago, one of the largest commercial email providers, MailChimp, released a free service that made the whole process super simple.

As you discover in my new book, TinyLetter Guide: Set up, design and send your first email newsletter in under an hour… for free!, it’s not much more complicated than writing an email in Gmail or in whatever email program you use. At the same time it takes care of all the unpleasant tasks like managing subscribers, keeping archives, tracking replies, creating signup forms. All that yucky stuff is mostly invisible to you, so you can focus on what’s important: Developing a relationship with your clients.

In this book I’ll take you through the process of setting up your own email newsletter. Just follow along and complete the tasks as I outline them. There are lots of pictures and illustrations so you can see exactly what needs to be done. You will:

  • Sign you up and configure your account
  • Create and customize your sign up form
  • Design your newsletter
  • Write the newsletter copy
  • Add five subscribers
  • And send your first newsletter

…all in about an hour!

And the email service is absolutely free!

Get the book on Amazon for just 99 cents!
The price goes up next week.

Right now the book is only available in Kindle version, but you don’t need a Kindle reader. You can read the book on any device: Your computer, laptop, tablet or phone. I may release a print version later down the road.

Also available as a video course on SkillShare. Recommended for more visual learners. I’ll be putting up more video courses on this site. Subscribe and get access to all of them. Use this link and get the first month for free!

Go to Amazon now to pick up your copy for just 99 cents!

I’ll be doing some livecasting around the topic of email over the next couple of days and answering questions. Follow me on Facebook so you can get notifications of the broadcasts: https://www.facebook.com/ebrown1.

What would you do in this situation?

wouldyouhelpImagine that you are closing your massage office for good as you get ready to embark on a new career. You are finishing up paperwork in your clinic when someone knocks on your door desperately in need of help. They outline their issue and you know you can really help them. Do you say:

1) “Too bad! You should have seen me months ago!”

or

2) “Yes, let me set up my table and I’ll take care of you before I leave.”

Seriously, how would you respond?

This week I find myself in that situation and I chose response #2. Of course if I can help someone I will. Why wouldn’t I?

In my case, I have therapists knocking on my door asking for help:

  • “Can I get access to any of your courses? I am getting close to opening my own practice and don’t know where to start.”
  • “I just moved to Germany and have only one client so far.”
  • “I’ve gone from being single and financially stable my entire life to supporting my boyfriend (who is back in school) and his four year old son since they were completely flooded out of their apartment.”
  • “I didn’t have the money to make any purchases when you offered it before.”

If I can help them before I’m gone, why not? Wouldn’t you do the same?

I’m closing shop at BodyworkBiz, but I still have a responsibility to my existing customers. As much as I’m ready to move on, I’ve promised therapists that they will continue to have access to BodyworkBiz resources until June 30, 2016. That’s why my retirement from the profession has been a process and not an event. I’m not going to disappear and leave people hanging. I’m not that kind of person.

This month my shopping cart service that processes purchases on my site comes to the end of its subscription period. I’m not renewing it. This is the equivalent of locking the doors for good, but I want to help those therapists that need help as zero hour approaches. So I’m giving everyone a final chance to pick up the entire package of resources at BodyworkBiz before the purchase links are deactivated.

You can get pretty much every resource ever produced at BodyworkBiz: From client education newsletters and technique videos, to courses and teaching kits.

How much?

Whatever you are able to pay. You tell me what you can afford and that’s the price you pay. No questions asked.

I’m going to suggest $199, but you can pay $100, $50, $20 or even nothing if you are truly destitute. You decide.

Some detractors think I’m some kind of scammer for making this package available one last time, but I’m not here for their approval.

I’m here for every therapist who wants to extend their reach, every therapist who wants to touch more lives in their community and every therapist who wants to improve their lives and the lives of those closest to them.

And I know those people are extremely grateful. I’ve already got notes like:

  • “Bless you!!! I would have bought this long ago if money weren’t so tight.”
  • “I don’t know how to thank you enough!”
  • “Thank you. Hopefully I will be making money soon and I will gladly pay you more.”
  • “Too good to miss out on a second time around.”

There is not one therapist who cannot benefit from the invaluable information and resources archived on the site, whether you own a clinic, are a sole practitioner or are contracted by someone else.

Please take advantage of this opportunity. There are only a few days left.

The Book I Wrote, Published and Made a Bestseller in Under Two Weeks…

I just wrote, published and got a book on the number 1 bestseller list on Amazon in under two weeks! I did it both as a challenge and as proof of concept for publishing. I knew I could do it, but I didn’t expect the book to rocket to bestseller status so quickly. Go me!!

It reached position 808 in terms of sales out of 3.2 million Kindle books. I don’t mind being in 800th place given the competition. 🙂

For a short time you can get the newly released 60 Clients in 60 Days book on Amazon for only 99 cents!

Grab it now:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V585K7E

The book has become an instant best seller and is currently ranked #1 in the Alternative Medicinecategory on Amazon.

Today in the Health, Fitness and Dieting category it’s beating out even Eckhart Tolle’s New Earth, The Four Agreements, Grain Brain and hundreds of other bestselling books. It’s in the top 20 in the huge Business category.

Pick it up for yourself from Amazon while it’s only 99 cents:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V585K7E

It’s only available in Kindle format for the time being, but you can easily read it on your computer, tablet, phone, or ipad.

Thousands of massage therapists have taken the 60 Clients in 60 Days e-course with incredible results. Although BodyworkBiz has officially closed and the course is no longer available, I’d like to make a final push and see this information in the hands of as many therapists as possible. Please forward this email or share this Facebook post to let your friends and colleagues know. The price will go up following this short launch campaign.

If you purchased the e-course or the retirement package that includes the course, get the book as a quick reference to supplement your online learning.

If you purchased the book already, please take a few minutes to leave a review on Amazon. It would be greatly appreciated. Getting your feedback is the motivation I need to continue to provide free or low cost resources like this:

Thanks so much for your support,

PS This has been a lot of fun. The royalties on a 99 cent book have made me enough to bring my girlfriend and couple friends out to Pizza Hut! Woo hoo!

Free Facebook Advertising Tutorials

“How do I get new clients?”

That’s the number one question on pretty much every massage therapist’s mind.

There are dozens and dozens of ways to get new clients. The problem is to choosing the most effective strategies, that is the strategies that get new clients in your door without costing you a ridiculous amount of money or time.

I’ve been a big proponent of the “Give to Get” strategy for ages because it’s super simple and has dramatically transformed the lives of so many BodyworkBiz subscribers over the years. If you want a refresher or aren’t familiar with the concept, attend my free World Massage Conference webinar “60 Clients in 60 Days” on Tuesday, March 24th at 9pm ET. On that broadcast I’ll also tell you how you can get the “60 Clients in 60 Days” book for only 99 cents. (Yes, it’s taken longer than I expected. Sorry about that.)

Is there anything else that works? Traditional advertising is pretty much dead, but some types on online advertising, like Facebook ads, can be extremely effective. You can take a look at this case study as an example.

There are a lot of great things about advertising on Facebook. A couple in particular:

  1. It’s “Pay per Click” advertising. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad, so you are really only paying for results.
  2. You can target who the ad is seen by with incredible granularity. For example, I could run a ad that is only seen by married female runners between the ages of 25 and 50 who live within a 5 mile radius of my clinic.
  3. It’s easy to do. You basically fill in a four-step form to create your ad.

How do you do it? I’ve created videos about this that are available for the people that have purchased the Retirement Sale package, but these were just an overview.

For some easy to understand, but comprehensive tutorials, check out this course:

https://lptraining.leadpages.net/facebookadvertising/

fbadsystemThis course is free. No catches. You don’t even have to sign up or give up your email address. It involves about four hours of video training, so I would suggest you set aside two full mornings and go through the entire course. As you watch the videos, open up your Facebook account and set up a couple test ads for yourself.

I would suggest you set up a page on your website with a special offer (this is called a landing page) that you send people to from your ad. Run an ad for a week. Keep your ad spend low: Maybe $20 to $50 total. Then track your results to determine your return on investment. For example, let’s assume that your average client purchases $500 of massage over their buying lifetime with you. If you spend $50 and get one new client then your return on investment is 10:1 ($500:$50). That 1000% return on investment.

So set aside some time to try some ads over the next month and come back to this blog post to tell us about your results or tell us what happened in the BodyworkBiz Facebook group.

Here’s What’s Happened at BodyworkBiz (week of December 14th)

Thanks for the well wishes over these past two weeks. It’s been a month of reflection as my official career as a massage therapist ends December 31st. I’ve been posting on the blog regularly and I thought I’d just send you a list of recent posts so you can decide what you want to look at:

2014-12-14_9-17-28A Plea to Help Your Fellow Therapists (or Yourself)…

I started BodyworkBiz as a “passion project” 15 years ago and never intended to make money with the site. After all, the browser had just come out five years earlier and I figured it would take another five years before any significant number of therapists started using the Internet. Take a look at this Facebook post that was made last week in one of the big massage groups (it’s shocking and sad, but not unexpected) and you’ll discover the reason why I started BodyworkBiz in the first place.

praise2How Do You Respond to Praise?

This has been an interesting month as I’ve announced the closing of BodyworkBiz. I have a following of detractors, but I also have a following of people who appreciate the work I do. And many of the later have been contacting me or posting here in the blog or Facebook thanking me for my contributions to their practice and the profession. It feels a little uncomfortable for me and not just because the sentiments sound a little like a eulogy. (I’m not quite dead yet.) But I think this raises some questions in terms of how you respond when your clients thank you. Tell me what you think…

294724_f260Why I’m Really Quitting Massage…

I’m giving up my massage license and closing BodyworkBiz. It’s not a marketing ploy. It’s actually happening. Lots of rumors are circulating and I’m getting calls from old friends wondering if I’m dying or have just lost my mind. Here are my reasons for getting out of massage stated as simply as I know how. Check out the video of my son at the bottom of the post. I’m always surprised and amazed when he does that.

So you know what you are getting when you purchase the Retirement Sale package, I’m doing short tours of some of the resources. I’ll produce a few more of these before the end of the month.

ELAP: Ready for Review and Feedback

You may or may not know about it…

Seven of the top massage leadership groups in the United States have been meeting over these past couple years to determine how they could work together to better serve the industry.

One of their first initiatives was determining what an entry level therapist needs to know to practice safely and how many hours of schooling are required to learn those skills. It has been a massive project and yesterday they released details as well as a way to provide feedback to the work group.

This project called the Entry-Level Analysis Project (ELAP) (not a particularly sexy name) has the potential to radically change the massage profession in the United States and your input is important. This will be particularly important at this point in time for massage instructors and school administrators, but it has such wide ranging implications that everyone should contribute their feedback. Yes, that means you.

You can give feedback as well as find out more about the project, it’s history, it findings and implications here…

http://www.elapmassage.org/

From the site:

The Entry-Level Analysis Project (ELAP) is a research project that defines the minimum number of training hours necessary to acquire knowledge and skills essential for safe and competent practice as an entry-level massage therapist. The project was initiated through conversations between the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education, American Massage Therapy Association, Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals, the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation, the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards, the Massage Therapy Foundation, and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

ELAP aims to obtain and use research data and analysis of findings from other massage profession projects to inform the creation of an entry-level curriculum map. The map will define the essential elements of an entry-level curriculum necessary for safe and competent practice in a massage career, as well as the number of hours deemed necessary to teach these learning objectives and outcomes. The project outputs will be used to inform the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) Model Practice Act designed to promote interstate portability of credentials in the massage profession. The recommendations of the ELAP project will be available to the massage profession as a resource to enhance consistency of entry-level curricula in massage and bodywork training programs.

FSMTB Shenanegins?

The Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) has taken a bit of a beating from CE providers over its recommendations to State boards in the area of continuing education. Why? Because the recommendations suggest that professional development be removed from the State requirements and that affects the bottom line for most CE providers.

I’m a CE provider myself, so the recommendations hurt me financially, but despite my competing interest, I do think the FSMTB is right on.

People who are critical of the plan do not understand the roles of the various organizations. State Boards and regulation exist for the purpose of protecting the public. Their responsibility is to the public, not massage therapists.

It’s the professional associations like NCBTMB, ABMP and AMTA who are charged with the role of supporting massage therapists. These associations are your advocates when your needs as a therapist conflict with the actions of the State boards. They should also play a role in promoting massage to the public.

Professional development is your job. You have proved that you can provide a safe competent service when you got licensed. So you have the requisite skills to do your job, but why wouldn’t you want to do your job even better through ongoing professional development?

So the FSMTB is doing exactly what they should be doing with these recommendations. Their role is not to force you to take ongoing training. They have no business in professional development. Their role is to support State boards in protecting the public.

Almost all disciplinary actions by the boards are around the issues of ethics, ex. sexual misconduct and fraud. There are few instances of therapists actually hurting people physically with massage. That is not a problem. You can look up this information on the board websites and see for yourself. So it just makes sense that the FSMTB works closely with the State boards to determine the issues that need to be addressed and develop relevant and standardized CE training to address those issues that have direct impact on the public. As well as to make any required training as accessible to the massage community as possible.

I recognize these recommendations make it harder continuing education providers (myself included) to make a living. And I feel a great deal of empathy for my fellow CE providers. But the fact is that this is the right thing for the profession. Instead of wasting time criticizing the FSMTB for actually staying within their scope, we as continuing education providers should be working with our professional member organizations to help make life-long learning a positive value in this profession and finding innovative ways to help therapists grow their skills as healing professionals.

Measuring the Wrong End of Our Students

The number of hours required for a massage education always seems to be a hot topic in the USA. But I’ve never really understood the obsession with measuring how much time a student spends with their butts planted in their chairs at school. Seems to me that we are measuring the wrong end of our students. Shouldn’t we be measuring their minds?
